It is often thought that ghostly activity is amplified by bodies of water. The more movement in the body of water, the more activity you will see. When water moves, the molecules and particles within the water start to bump and collide. If a particle in the water is an ionic compound and creates a static charge, the water is able to pull apart the negative and positive ionic molecules. Due to the unusual properties of water, the ions are able to wander around in the water like kids at a street fair. As more collisions occur, the more ions start to drift around in water.
This is one of the psychological theories of why people are drawn to bodies of water as it is speculated that humans need ionic molecules in their bodies. These molecules affect mood.
Have you ever thought of yourself as more creative or at peace at a large body of water or running water? You can thank the “wandering street fair kids” of ionic compound collisions!
Since these ions are wandering around and people are naturally drawn to this reaction, it is no surprise that many hauntings are reported along lakes, major rivers, and ocean shores.

I know that you are wondering what happens to these floating ions in the bodies of water. Well eventually they bump into one another and are attracted to each other. They begin to build. Then, they start to drift down to the bottom of the water body and start to form crystals such as salt. Quartz is another form of an ionic compound.
For the same reasons as why water is said to have paranormal properties, crystals are also thought to have properties that affect the ghostly activity.
Have you ever heard that thunder storms help increase activity? Lightning and rain also help to create ionic molecules to be separated from air molecules. When someone says that they love the smell of rain, they are actually referring to the smell of ionic reactions!
