History

The MNPSG was contacted by a 19 year old St. Scholastica student who believed that her parents home was haunted in Superior, WI. She had found our website through the TAPS website.

She reported strange going ons at the home:

  • She was hit in the head by a coin while in the shower. This occurred at 5:30 AM and no one else was awake.
  • An heirloom radio of her deceased grandfather's had turned on by itself. It had happened to her and to her cousin on two separate occassions.
  • An family friend and sensitive had told her father that there was activity within the home.
  • She reported feelings of panic and anxiety in the basement.
  • She reported hearing voices and footsteps while in the home when alone.

Original E-Mail:

Hello,

I was perusing the TAPS sight and stumbled upon your site. I'm writing to you because I've lived my whole life in an 1890's Dutch colonial house in Superior, WI, and I've had many things happen to my family and I in that house that I just can't explain. I've seen an apparition out of the corner of my eye, had a coin hit me in the head in the basement (where most of the activity takes place) bathroom shower (at 5:30 in the morning when no one was up), and my cousin and I have both had our long-deceased grandfather's radio turn on by itself on us on different times (also in basement bathroom). I've heard footsteps and voices on occasion as well. Being alone in any part of the house, I feel like someone is watching me, and it's very unnerving. My parents have always been very skeptic, but my dad has started to experience similar things. I believe in the paranormal, but I'm not looking to prove that it's paranormal what's been going on, but I'd just like to see if there is any evidence that can help us understand what's going on. If there are alternate explanations, or any explanations at all, I think it would help us better understand our home. I don't know if this holds any weight, but we've had two family friends who've never met each other before say to us that they can see/sense entities in our house, especially in the basement. I am by the way in college up at St. Scholastica but my parents would be open to an investigation if you are interested.
Hope to hear from you soon!

The team geared up and set up for a trip into Wisconsin, a first for the MNPSG. With Don as a WI native, he was our guide into the strange land of Cheese. Mick, Adam and Don rode together while Justin would meet us down there as he had to drive from Bemidji.

Investigation

The team arrived around 7 pm and was met by the family. The home was quite decorative although it did resemble the Amittyville House. The family was hopsitable and we walked in at dinner time as the father was cooking. Mick and Adam took a tour with Elizabeth, the 19 year old daughter who had called us in. We noted that most activity happened in the basement so Mick and Adam recorded baseline readings in the basement. They noted that the ambient EMF was anywhere from a 2 milligauss to a 144 milligauss. The basement contained such things as two refrigerator/freezer units, florescent lights, a boiler furnance, copper piping mixed with unshielded wiring, and a dehumidifer unit. All these things were running when we had measured the baseline and this explained a lot of the feelings of dread and anxiety in the basement.

We also noticed that the bathroom where the client had reported being hit in the head by a coin was in the basement. There were various coins in the basement due to it also serving as a laundry room. The coin itself wouldn't have been hard to find but didn't explain its propeltion.

Once the cooking was done, we invited Elizabeth to join us if she wanted to. As a fan of the Ghost Hunters TV series, she was more than eager to do so. We divided up into two teams:

  • Mick, Adam and Elizabeth
  • Justin and Don

Justin and Don started the investigation in the basment. They were down there for around 35-40 minutes and noted that they had seen a shadow figure move along the side of the bathroom door. With that being a spot where we had a DVR camera, we left it up to the camera to catch it and hope that was evidence.

During this time, Adam and Mick talked with Elizabeth to find out more about the home, the reports, and also talk to her about our group and where the team had been. It was a casual conversation and allowed us to pass the time while the other team was in the basement. It was a quiet level of conversation but they did notice that they could hear the other team quite profoundly in the basment while they did and EVP session.

The teams switched locations.

Adam, Mick and Elizabeth had nothing to note while in the basement.

The teams switched again with Don, Mick and Elizabeth going into the basement. They thought that the MEL meter was showing intelligent signs of EMF disturbance but it was minute (fluctuations of 0.1-0.4 milligauss) so not worth more than noting, considering the baselines in the basement.

Adam and Justin investigated the basement one last time and tried to repeat these fluctations which was repeatable in minute numbers. Nothing odd to report.

Observations and Conclusions

The home is wired for high EMFs. There is no doubts about that. Being a technically dependent society, we all have computers, televisions, lights, appliances, copper piping, electrically activated heating devices, stereos, and so forth that are an integral part of our lives and this family was no different. The home was originally built in the 1890s and the family had done a wonderful job restoring it and keeping it up with the times but let's face it, no one ever thinks about EMF problems in basements that much when doing the remodel work.

The home was a permanent field of what is considered high EMF for humans. (1.1 mG and up with the home having ambient spots of 2 mG and up). As mentioned so much on Ghost Hunters and all those spin offs, high EMF fields can be dangerous to humans when left in exposure for an excessive amount of time. This is a condition called "electromagnetic hypersensitivity" and has become a fascinating world study in the health field.

Some symptoms of electromagnetic hypersensitivty include:

  • A warm or burning sensation in the face somewhat like feeling sunburnt
  • A tingling or prickling sensation across the face or other parts of the body
  • Extreme dryness of mucus membranes such as the back of the throat and eyes
  • A swelling of the mucus membranes such as nose, throat, ears and sinuses without any infectious cause
  • Problems with concentration, loss of memory and dizziness
  • A feeling of impending influenza (flu) that somehow never quite breaks out
  • Headaches and nausea
  • Teeth and jaw pains
  • Aches and pains in muscles and joints
  • Cardiac palpitations

Also with these symptoms, you may have the feeling of paranoia or being watched. This condition can also create hallucinations when left in a high field for a prolonged period of time.

The question that we are asked often is how can we fix this? How does one stop this from affecting their family and the answer is simple; shield your wires, unclog the electrical congestion in your home, turn off devices that you do not need anymore. Consult an electrician who may be able to help you out.

We cannot explain all of Elizabeth's claims of activity such as the coin hitting her or the radio turning on and off as we were unable to repeat them. We were unable to capture any objective evidence that would support unexplained activity and while we did have personal experiences, I am not sure that the team being exposed to high EMF was not the cause in that as the symptoms can cause you to see something that is not really there. We had to rely on our cameras and since they did not record the same reported evidence, we have to chalk that up to go with the most logical explanation.

FINAL CONCLUSION: NOT HAUNTED.
